The Project

For some time, the team at St Werburghs City Farm had been looking around for a paving product that was suitable to allow everyone access to their City Allotment. The criteria for the paving required needed to be wheelchair friendly, so gravel alone would not have been suitable. Sarah from SWCF called to enquire about our rubber grass mats product to ensure they were wheelchair friendly.

The charity has previously used us before for another project but this project was for their Ashley Hill Allotments which are used to grow vegetables, plants and flowers by a number of people in order to sell to raise funds for the farm. Local community groups also use the facilities who want to try their hand at gardening when they may not have a chance to do so otherwise. To supply our grass protection mats to help such a fantastic community project made us feel delighted.

To see how Sarah and the team at SWCF used our products read on.

The Work

Bristol City Council were the former managers for the allotments but SWCF have recently taken over meaning they are responsible for renting out allotments and carrying out any maintenance needed. Due to it’s popularity their is currently a waiting list of 2 years long!

The team which included volunteers laid the mats all around the allotments. This was no small task as you can see from the photos. There was a base layer of Weed Membrane with grass mats placed on top using 5 pegs used per mat to secure it in place and keep movement to a minimum. Using cable ties, a mat either side were secured to the mat placed down along with 2 ties per short edge and 3 per long edge. This helps to reduce movement with the mats and helps keep gaps between the rubber grass mats to a minimum to keep accidents from trips from occuring.

Conclusion

The mats were placed throughout the community gardens and around a Polytunnel to ensure that nobody has been excluded from their small farming community so that everyone the ability to access the gardens.

The feedback provided from Sarah said that the mats had worked fantastically well and provided the much needed access required. To complete the last section of the allotment SWCF will be ordering more grass mats from us in the near future. Thank you to SWCF for providing the information & photos required for this blog and we are glad that we could supply the required product to help you improve accessibility within the allotment.
